ROOTS symbolises our vision of re-densifying cities in a climate-neutral way with the construction material wood. This unique, 19-storey wooden building, with a height of approx. 65 metres, will form part of the gateway to the Elbbückenquartier neighbourhood in Hamburg’s HafenCity district.
5,500 cubic metres of pinewood: by virtue of this construction method, we are creating a best case and contributing to climate-efficient and resource-saving development projects. The planning comprises a high share of prefabricated components, which were mounted since 2022. As such, Garbe Urban Real Estate is not only helping to reduce the project’s carbon footprint, but also limiting the noise emissions associated with construction.
A symbiosis of urbanity and the environment: we are developing 181 residential units – 128 owner-occupied flats and 53 publicly subsidised flats – on a gross floor area of some 20,600 square metres. The design by Hamburg-based architectural firm Störmer Murphy and Partners combines high-end architecture with an increasing desire for affinity with the natural world. Views of the port, the HafenCity district and the city centre are rounded off by the natural properties of wood and light, a 600-square meter communal inner courtyard and the inclusion of an interactive exhibition by Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung. Completion was in 2024, with an investment volume of approx. €140 million.
